Beckham
Footballer, Fashion Icon, Father of 3, and Beekeeper…
He’s one of the most well-known names on the planet, yet few people know who he really is. From his humble working-class beginnings in east London, his drive and determination to win, and the battle to find a balance between ambition, love, and family, David’s story is one of immense ups and downs. The series takes you on that roller coaster and builds a surprising, personal, and definitive story of one of the most recognisable athletes of all time.
In "Beckham", Academy Award-winner Fisher Stevens (Palmer, And We Go, Green, The Cove) along with Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning producer John Battsek (One Day in September, Searching for Sugar Man, Winter on Fire) are granted unprecedented access to David, his wife Victoria, his family, his friends, and his team-mates. The result is an intimate portrait of a man as well as a chronicle of late-modern sports and celebrity culture.
I don’t tend to follow celebrity culture, I appreciate the talents of the talented ones, and I enjoy writing about these. My website currently has a streak of football-related content. I have a huge appreciation for the sport now. It’s the behind-the-scenes of what goes into the game, the training, negotiations and how family are so often at the core of who they are as players. This documentary touched on David Beckham’s life as a young footballer, the love of the game, and the passion and drive he has for it.
It occurred to me last night that a good part of his success was accomplished because of his parent’s dedication in keeping his love of the game alive and kicking (quite literally). I’m no stranger to what this sort of lifestyle involves as I have 2 and a half nephews (one is only 5) who are also incredibly talented and young footballers, and so I truly admire the sacrifices these athletes make and their families.
Despite my lack of knowledge of the Beckhams from the social media realm, I do know that this particular family has endured a lot when it has come to being scrutinised. From experience, I know the Beckhams have good strong morals, work hard, and have always struck me as being a solid foundation, despite the obstacles. Last night when they arrived on the carpet, it was evident that they were proud to be a Beckham.
