From red carpets to international tours, your work spans so many different realms of the cultural industry. What’s been the most memorable moment for you in this whirlwind of events?
Taking risks and trusting myself have always been central to my journey, and one of the most defining moments of my journey came from a leap of faith. I decided to transfer universities because I felt the new curriculum better aligned with my personal and professional aspirations. It was a bold move, but I was determined to put myself in a position where I could thrive and grow.
Then came a moment of spontaneity that would change everything. Despite the applications for creative roles at the London 2012 Olympics Ceremonies having closed, I sent in my CV anyway, with nothing but hope and a sense of possibility. I was willing to take any chance that came my way, so when they offered me a cleaning position, I took it. I wasn’t looking for a glamorous role. I was looking for an opportunity to be part of something monumental.
And just as I was about to begin, an email arrived that would alter the course of my path forever. Film director Danny Boyle had seen my CV and wanted to meet me. That meeting opened a door I never expected. It was a chance to work with the casting department for the ceremonies, an experience that gave me a front-row seat to the world of large-scale, live productions. I soon realised that casting wasn’t just a job, it was a passion, and an area I had been unknowingly preparing for. This was my ‘specialist subject,’ and my journey in the creative industry truly began here.
However, the road wasn’t without its challenges. My university tutor told me that joining the Olympics would jeopardise my graduation, and for a moment, it made me question my choices. But the lesson I learned through that adversity has been invaluable: not everyone will understand your path, but staying true to yourself and your dreams is the only way forward. I graduated, not just with a degree, but with the knowledge that the right opportunities will always find you if you’re bold enough to take the leap.
